IOC Framework on Fairness, Inclusion and Non-Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity and Sex

 Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES). (2022) “Transgender Women Athletes and Elite Sport: A Scientific Review.” This literature review commissioned by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (now known as Sport Integrity Canada), reviewed the scientific and grey literature regarding trans women athletes participation in elite and high-performance sport. The researchers concluded that the "literature review does not support bans on transgender women athletes."

IOC Framework on Fairness, Inclusion and Non-Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity and Sex

The International Olympic Committee has had numerous regulatory policies in place since 2003 surrounding eligibility requirements of transgender athletes in the Olympic Games. In 2021 the IOC released the Framework on Fairness, Inclusion and Non-Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity and Sex. No openly transgender athletes competed in the Olympic Games until 2021.


*On March 26, 2026, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) changed its policy on the eligibility of transgender and intersex athletes, with: Policy on the Protection of the Female (Women’s) Category in Olympic Sport and Guiding Considerations for International Federations and Sports Governing Bodies.

Through lived experience accounts from trans, nonbinary, and gender diverse athletes this book proposed solutions for inclusion across all levels of sport.
